LINE UP OF PLAYS
|
Monday, April 8th |
Tainted
Justice by Don Nigro |
presented by Vagabond Players,
directed by Dale Kelly
A true story of lust and murder based on the
twisted series of events surrounding the death of a prominent Nova Scotia businessman in
1914. First thought to be an accident, but later resulting in a charge of murder, the
incident drew international attention and left reputations in tatters. The murder inquiry
was further complicated by a poor investigation, and the question, "Was justice
served?" still arises today. Based on the book, "Tainted Justice 1914", by
David Newton, Don Nigro's clever script explores the ambiguity of motives and the far
reaching implications inherent in murder. Was the murder a cold-blooded assassination or a
crime of passion? This insightful production provides a dark look at the motives for evil
and the corrupting influence that a single innocent occurrence can have on the human soul.

Psychopathia
Sexualis by John Patrick Shanley |
presented by White Rock Players,
directed by Dave Baron
This John Patrick Shanley play is a wicked satire on our perceptions of
normality. Arthur, a young painter, is about to marry Lucille, a beautiful Texan.
Unfortunately, Arthur has a small problem - he cannot make love without his father's
argyle socks. Even worse, his "evil" psychiatrist, Dr. Block, has stolen the
crucial hosiery in a last-ditch attempt to cure him of his fetish.
In desperation, Arthur turns to his best friend, Howard, who is an expert in the field of
psychoanalysis. Or believes himself to be an expert, at least. Dr. Block turns out to be
quite a formidable opponent who stands no nonsense from someone like Howard. It then falls
to Lucille to retrieve the footwear, guided by Howard's wife Ellie, who is also a force to
be reckoned with.

SHOWCASE
NIGHT (non-adjudicated) |
This Is A Play by Daniel MacIvor,
presented by Out To Lunch Players, directed
by John Cousins
Auntie and Sissy live a quiet,
simple existence, until one day a stranger looking for answers in connection with his
brother's death enters their lives and tears their world apart. He forces shameful secrets
to light... secrets about lettuce. This is the plot for "A Stranger Among Us,' the
melodrama play-within-the-play of 'This is A Play'. Written in the literary tradition of
'Noises Off' or 'Jitters", 'This Is a Play" explores the neuroses and
inner dialogue that runs through an actoes mind as they are on stage, with hilarious
results. If you've ever been involved in any aspect of theatre, this play is sure to
strike a note with your funny bone!

Medicine
by LaVerne Adams |
presented by Theatre In The Raw,
directed by Jay Hamburger
A moving drama about five First Nations girls
(teenagers) sent to a B.C. Native residential school, managed by nuns during the 1950's. A
battle of wills and native traditions versus white, religious and traditional schooling
begins to unfold as we witness how each of the girls manages to survive in a culture that
is foreign and not her own. The play's theme currently still affects many surviving
members within the First Nations community throughout Canada today.

Friday, April 12th |
The
Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams |
presented by 3 Daze in Nanaimo,
directed by Michael Fenwick
Written in 1941, 'The Glass
Menagerie' is a memory play, set in St. Louis in 1937, and its action is drawn from the
memories of the narrator, Tom Wingfield. The play centers around the Wingfield family and
their struggle against the hopelessness which threatens each of their lives. Tom struggles
to achieve his dreams, against his overbearing mother and the need to support his
introverted sister. At the request of his mother, Tom finds a potential suitor for his
sister, with surprising results. Laura reveals her underlying concern about her physical
appearance and about her inability to successfully integrate herself into society. This
highly personal, explicitly autobiographical play earned Williams fame, fortune, and
critical respect, and it marked the beginning of a winning streak that would last for
another ten years.
