DAVID ROSS: has been the Artistic Producer of Western Canada Theatre in Kamloops BC for sixteen years. Prior to returning to the West, he co-founded Rising Tide Theatre in St.John's, Newfoundland, touring Canada, England, Wales, and Ireland with that company. David has served Western Canada Theatre and other companies as an actor, director, musician, dramaturge, and sound designer. Some favourite roles in recent years include Nathan Detroit in "Guys and Dolls", Sir Toby Belch in "Twelfth Night", and Sister Mary Regina in "Nunsense". Recent directing credits include "The Orphan Muses", "Other People's Money", "Amadeus", and "An Inspector Calls",and "You'll Get Used to It!-The War Show". In addition to his work at Western Canada Theatre he has adjudicated drama festivals in both BC and Newfoundland, has taught innumerable workshops , and performs celtic/folk music whenever possible. He has also performed in film, television, and radio where he has acted in more than one hundred dramas for CBC Radio. His recording of "The Divine Ryans by Wayne Johnston for "Between the Covers" has just been released in cassette form as an audio book. |

ROBERT METCALFE: has worked across Canada as
an actor, director and fight choreographer since graduating from Studio 58 in 1980.
Locally, Robert has been seen on the stages of the Vancouver Playhouse, the Arts Club,
Richmond Gateway Theatre, Touchstone Theatre and Green Thumb Theatre. He has also appeared
in "the usual" American films and television shows. With John Lazarus, Robert
adapted Feydeau's "L'Hotel Du Libre Exchange" into a sixties romp,
"Hotel Freedom". Robert has directed more than twenty professional productions
including "Peter Pan" for Richmond Gateway Theatre, "Barbie's Next Life"
at the Kiss Project, and "The Odd Couple" for the Theatre Department of
Douglas College. Bob was the Associate Artistic Director at Green Thumb Theatre in
Vancouver for two years and his Production of "New Kid" was awarded the Reuters Prize for "Outstanding Production" atthe 1997 Dublin International Theatre Festival. This spring keep an eye open for the touring production of "The Number 14" which Robert directed. Previously for Theatre BC, he has served as a Guest Director, Adjudicator of the North Shore and Okanagan Zone Festivals in 1998 and the North Island Zone in 1999, a Regional Workshop on directing in Cranbrook earlier this year, and has proven to be a popular BACKSTAGE Instructor. Theatre BC is also pleased to offer Robert's expertise once again this spring, as Adjudicator for the Kootenay Zone Festival in May. |

ANDREW McILROY: is a graduate of the National Theatre
School and Ottawa University. He has been teaching for over 15 years at, among other
places, Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, Simon Fraser University and at Gastown
Actor's Studio in Vancouver. Andrew has served as a drama- turge to more than 17 new Canadian scripts. Recent guest-starring roles include First Wave, Dead Mans Gun, Hollywood Off Ramp and Cold Squad. He will soon be seen in the upcoming feature film Trixie with Nick Nolte. For Theatre BC, Andrew has served as a juror for TBC's Annual Canadian Playwrighting Competition, a dramaturge for TBCs New Play Workshops, including the Full-length winner "Swollen Tongues. A favourite at BACKSTAGE, Andrew is also one of the most requested workshop instructors throughout the Zones of Theatre BC. He has adjudicated Zone Festivals for most of TBC's Zones since 1994 and this this year is the SIZ Adjudicator in Lake Cowichan. In 1998, Andrew was the Workshop Plays Instructor and we are delighted to have him with us again in this capacity. |
| Participants in these exciting
two-and-a-half day workshops will observe the first performance of the Workshop Play,
taking and comparing notes with the Instructors, either Robert Metcalfe or Andrew McIlroy.
Over the next two days, directing students will have the opportunity to observe the
Instructors rehearsals and at the end of each session, discuss choices that were
made and the techniques used. Although the participants will have no
voiceduring the actual rehearsals, they will have opportunities to discuss strategies and methods with the Instructors before and after each session. The Lab gives the participants a chance to have a hands-on experience rather than a theory only class. Dont miss this special opportunity to learn directing skills first hand.
