Message From Mainstage 2000 Chairman

Not quite three years ago, I volunteered to help build sets for the fledgling Sidekick Players Club’s first production. Now I sit here writing a letter of welcome to you as the Chair of Mainstage 2000, hosted by the very same Sidekick Players Club. To say that I am proud of all that our club has accomplished in such a short time would be an understatement to the skill and dedication of this "little engine that could." Thank-you everyone who contributed to Mainstage 2000, and made it the success that it is, and especially to Carroll Lefebvre for her vision and drive, and her ability to extract more from us than we feel capable of giving.

The host committee has planned an exciting week for you at Mainstage 2000. To start, there is a full slate of productions (such a scheduling nightmare!), workshops, scene development, and workshop plays to help hone your theatrical skills. Later, relax (or not!) as you renew old acquaintances and strike up new ones in the Green Rooms, or debate your ideas with the best theatrical minds during the Coffee Critiques. It’s all there for the taking!

I hope that you join in the festival spirit, and enjoy everything Mainstage 2000 has to offer, as you "Play Around in Delta"

Jack MacDonald

The Sidekick Players Club History

In June, 1997, after many years of talking about it, Carroll Lefebvre decided to take the plunge and test the waters about starting a theatre group in South Delta. A press release went to the paper announcing a meeting about a brand new theatre company to be held on the Friday of the Canada Day weekend. She didn’t expect to see many people there, but when the meeting convened, there were almost 30 people in the hot room who shared the same interest in theatre. At the end of the meeting, 26 of those people had signed-up as founding members of The Sidekick Players Club and today, many remain as very active members.

The first event they participated in was The Tsawwassen Sun Festival Parade, where they won First Prize for their entry....the bar was set!

They decided to present The Wind in the Willows for their inaugural play...just a simple little children’s show that had over 60 cast members when it finally hit the stage in December, 1997. The show was a huge success and is still talked about by many people who ventured out to support this new group. The Christmas show has now become a tradition and the audiences come from as far away as Mission and North Vancouver.

Following Willows, the club decided to produce Waiting for the Parade. Then the cast and crew decided to join Theatre BC, and entered the Vancouver Zone Festival to find out what they were doing wrong. Much to their surprise, they won seven out of ten awards, including the coveted Best Production. This enabled them to perform Mainstage ’98 where they won two Thespian awards.
