Theatre BC and the Mainstage 2008 Host Organizing Committee are
pleased to announce a provincial scholarship opportunity for drama
students throughout British Columbia. Theatre BC is offering
fifteen Mainstage 2008 Student Scholarships to be awarded to
selected applicants.
At
75 years, Mainstage is one of the longest running theatre traditions
in Canada and represents the largest community theatre-based event
in the country. Theatre professionals from around BC participate as
adjudicators and workshop instructors in this multi-faceted event.
As
an added bonus, Theatre BC is thrilled to announce that Jeff Hyslop
will be our Adjudicator for MAINSTAGE 2008! To many, he is the
quintessential “Phantom of the Opera,” a role he embraced in the
Andrew Lloyd Webber Musical for over 900 performances. Jeff’s
world-class talent and generosity will be appreciated by many
long-time theatre-lovers, and this is a unique experience for high
school students to learn from one of Canada’s top theatrical
performers.
Continually
broadening his career, Jeff is in demand for his theatrical teaching
expertise encompassing adjudication, as well as scene, song and
dance workshops. Not only will he be sharing his craft with Theatre
BC’s scholarship students, he will also provide a generous serving
of proven strategies that will inspire them to reach towards their
full potential in the world of theatre.
All students considering pursuing theatre in any form following
high school are eligible to apply. Each scholarship (valued at $200
per student) will include an all-access Festival Pass for this
year's nine-day Mainstage 2008 event, running July 4 – 12th
at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo. Each of these scholarships will
cover admission to:
-
all ten
Mainstage performances
at the Port Theatre (eight evenings plus two matinees), featuring
the "Best Production" from each of Theatre BC's ten regional "Zone
Festivals" being held throughout the province in May. Productions
are selected by the contracted theatre-professional adjudicator at
each Zone Festival. Each evening, the Festival Adjudicator will
provide a brief public adjudication from the stage, following the
performance;
-
three
Workshop Plays
(two performances and daytime workshopping each). These are Zone
Festival productions selected through an application process;
-
the
President's Reception
on Opening Night, prior to the first performance at the Port
Theatre, with guest Past Presidents and Award winners, and invited
dignitaries. The Scholarship recipients will be introduced at this
reception;
-
all
eight Green Room parties,
running each evening following the evening performances;
-
all ten
Coffee Critiques,
running each morning (and afternoon following matinee days). The
Coffee Critiques feature the Festival Adjudicator and the cast &
crew of the previous day's Mainstage performance in a
seminar/workshop/discussion on what worked, what could have worked
better and the suggestions the Adjudicator may have for the group;
-
the
Final Night Banquet and Awards Ceremony,
held at the Coast Bastion Inn. This is the culmination of the
Mainstage Festival and features the presentation of Theatre BC's
coveted "Thespian Awards" to the 15 category winners, as selected by
the Festival Adjudicator.
Theatre BC will also include registration to two
Backstage at Mainstage course workshops for each scholarship
student. The students will also have at least one opportunity for
caucus meeting with Theatre BC/Mainstage representatives to offer
their feedback on the event, have their questions answered and
assist the organization in further developing our Mainstage
scholarship program.
One of last year’s MAINSTAGE Scholarship recipients has summed up
her experience by saying,
‘I
thought that MAINSTAGE was an incalculably valuable experience.
Being able to see all of those amazing plays was fantastic, and
comparing my impressions to those of the adjudicator at the coffee
critiques was really helpful as well. I became a much more
knowledgeable audience member and learned so much about live
theatre. The workshops were great because I was able to choose
something that I was interested in learning more about. One of the
workshops I attended was taught by an instructor from Capilano
College, and meeting her has made me reconsider attending the
theatre programs there. The workshops gave me lots of quick tips
that I can use later on in my theatre career and I was able to ask
lots of questions. I loved being able to meet more 'theatre people'
from Kamloops and beyond. In all, the experience I had at MAINSTAGE
was just a whirlwind of amazing event after amazing event, and I am
definitely coming to Nanaimo this summer.’

Once the
applicants have been selected and notified, a representative of
Theatre BC would like to make a scholarship presentation as part of
each school's awards ceremony, if indeed time permits.
