Jeff Hyslop (Performance)


Vancouver-born Jeff Hyslop is indisputably one of Canada's foremost performing artists. Equally masterful as a singer, dancer, actor - he has starred with unqualified success in such landmark musical productions as Cabaret, Kiss of the Spider Women, Jacques Brel, The Producers and of course the role of Mike in both the London West End and Broadway productions of A Chorus Line. To many he is the quintessential Phantom of the Opera, a role he embraced for over 900 performances.He starred as Jeff the Mannequin in the TVO children's series Today's Special which sustained a huge popularity for over 10 years. At age 21, Jeff was dancing and singing in Norman Jewison's film Jesus Christ Superstar. His numerous television appearances include series for both CTV and CBC-TV, the most memorable of these being his own Dancin' Man superspecial where he partnered his favourite leading lady, Karen Kain.
Jeff has received numerous awards including 3 Jessies - 2 for Best Choreography the other for Best Director; 5 nominations for the ACTRA Award for Best Variety Performer and a Dora Mavor Moore Award in 1984 for On Tap.
Choreography and directing are Jeff's real love and it shows in productions such as Peter Pan, A Chorus Line, On Tap, Guys and Dolls and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Most recent productions under his direction as Artistic Director for Showcase Festival - The Dream On Royal Street andKiss Me, Kate. Showcase Festival - the new summer theatre for enjoyment in Campbell River and Courtenay/ Comox.The ever-growing resurgance of interest in adult tap & jazz classes and Musical Theatre in general are keeping Jeff "on his toes".
For Theatre BC, Jeff has led sold-out workshops on movement, choreography and musical theatre at Mainstage festivals in Nanaimo (2005) and Maple Ridge (2006). He adjudicated the Zone Festival for the Okanagan Zone (2007) and has facilitated workshops for individual member clubs.


Mike Taugher (Technical)

Michael is the Department Chair, General Manager and Stagecraft Instructor for the Malaspina University-College Theatre Department in Nanaimo. Previous to moving to Vancouver Island he was the Technical Director for the Department of Drama, University of Calgary. Michael does Set & Lighting Designs for Malaspina Theatre and design work for other professional Theatre companies as time allows.
He has designed Set and Lighting for many Theatre One (Nanaimo) shows over the last 18 years. Recent shows for Theatre One include Set Design for “Concubines Children”, Set and Lighting for “Best Left Buried”, Lighting Design for “Drawer Boy”, and Set Design for “If We are Women” as well as numerous other designs for the company in various spaces in town. He has also designed locally for the Chemainus Theatre Company, and while in Calgary for Decidedly Jazz Dance, One Yellow Rabbit, Calgary Folk Festival, Denise Clarke and countless shows at the University of Calgary.
He welcomes this opportunity to be part of Mainstage 2008 and to be the Technical adjudicator for the festival plays.

Dramaturge: Kathryn Shaw

Kathryn began teaching at Studio 58, the Professional Theatre Training Program at Langara College, in 1974, and has been the Artistic Director since 1985. She received her B.A. in Dramatic Art from Whitman College and an M.F.A in acting from Columbia University's School of Arts. For the past 30 years, Kathryn has directed for theatres across Canada and has taught acting for professional and community groups in British Columbia, Winnipeg and Halifax and has been a guest instructor at the National Theatre School in Montreal.
Some of her directing work includes Trelawny of the Wells for Studio 58, The Great Depression by Joan MacLeod, which was part of Obsession, a co-prooduction with Studio 58 and Green Thumb Theatre and The Weir for Western Canada Theatre and the Belfry Theatre.Other credits include A Midsummer Night's Dream for Studio 58, The Bachelor Brothers On Tour for the Vancouver Playhouse , Skylight for the Belfry Theatre and The Glass Menagerie, Death Of A Salesman, The Front Page and Cyrano de Bergerac for the Gateway Theatre. Kathryn also co-wrote and performed in the Angry Actors' 1997 Vancouver Fringe Festival hit, Famous Dead Stories We Just Made Up.
Kathryn was the adjudicator for Mainstage '90 in Chilliwack and Mainstage 2004 in Kamloops, and has also participated as a Scene Development Director.

Dramaturge: Fran Gebhard

Fran Gebhard is currently an acting instructor at UVic. She has adjudicated several zone festivals and served as a dramaturge and juror for TBC’s playwriting competition. Fran has been a professional actor for 30 years and has been directing for 10. She has her MFA in directing from UBC. 
Fran was a juror for the 10th (1998), 12th (2000) and 18th (2006) Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competitions and also served as a Round Table dramaturge at TheatreBC's New Play Festival in Victoria in1999 and Kamloops in 2002. She has traveled to most zones as a Regional Instructor in acting/directing, as well as Workshop Play instructor at Mainstage '02 in Nanaimo. Fran is also a popular Zone Festival Adjudicator.
