presented by Rivercity Players (Campbell River)

A college student's life is given meaning when he chose to sponsor Elias, a young El Salvadorian refugee, as a class project.  As Elias tried to find his place with the family that has sponsored him, the family in turn learns what it means to feel like a refugee and how to relate to someone who has endured such intense personal grief.

Cooper, a fiercely independent, crotchety resident of a retirment lodge, flirts with staff, spars with family and shares support with an old friend as they heroically battle the frustrating and rigors of aging.

presented by Nanaimo Theatre Group

This very funny, yet touching play focuses on the lives of four mentally-challenged men who live in a communal residence under the watchful eye of an increasingly "burned out" social worker.

Mrs. Stephenson, an invalid, overhears a telephone call between two men. She believes that the men are planning to murder someone, and she tries to prevent the murder.

 

and LOVE LETTERS by A.R. Gurney

presented by Yellow Point Drama Group (Nanaimo)

An unusual presentation of parallel biographies. This script is a series of letters between two contemporaries, male and female. They develop from childhood, youth and maturity and to a conclusion. Without bodily contact, the play explores emotions, opportunities and dependencies of two sensitive lives.

 

Thursday, May 10- 7:30 pm A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM by William Shakespeare

presented by Theatre Now! (Powell River)

Four lovers are called before Thesus, Duke of Athens, to settle a dispute of the heart. Deciding to elope, they find themselves in the magical, passionate and sinister world of the night, ruled over by Titania and Oberon. They become caught in the King and Queen's quarrel, and at the mercy of the mischievous Puck. Meanwhile, a group of hapless Mechanicals are attempting to rehearse for Thesus' wedding day (a Play). They become embroiled in Puck's meddling.

Saturday, May 12 -2:00 pm VISITING MR. GREEN by Jeff Baron

presented by Hornby Island Theatre Society

The story the growing relationship between two men in NewYork; an elderly orthodox Jew and a younger corporate executive. After almost hitting Mr. Green with his car, Ross is charged with reckless driving and as punishment is required by the judge to help Mr. Green once a week for six months. The story unfolds through their weekly visits as they come to know and care about each other and to help each other move past old wounds and bitterness to an acceptance of who they have become.

Jack Vail charms his way in to the house of Mrs. Virgina Tilford in an attempt to get her out of her grieving slump. With the acceptance of her companion, Nancy Kimble, the three take an imaginary journey through the Americas whilst still in Mrs. Tilford's Rhode Island living room.

Workshop Play Recommendation

Visiting Mr. Green

The Donna Lamb Award was awarded to Lorna Pennock of Rivercity Players, Campbell River.

Zone Festivals are held in each of Theatre BC’s Zones throughout the spring, leading to the annual provincial MAINSTAGE theatre festival. Productions from each Zone Festival will participate as a "Best Production", "Workshop Play" or "Scene Development" at Theatre BC's Mainstage 2001 in Kamloops, B.C., June 30 to July 7.
