Breaking The Code by Hugh Whitemore

presented by The North Vancouver Community Players

A biographical play based on the life of Alan Turing, so-called father of the computer - a brilliant young man who, during the war, helped to break the German submarine Enigma code. The play deals with his personality, his love of mathematics and his homosexuality. The power of the play lies in its ability to compare the beauty and perfection of mathematics, which Turing so admires, with his own human imperfections. Breaking the Code is set in June 7, 1954 in Wilmslow, Cheshire, England and visits years prior. Directed by Dave McIntosh

Wednesday, May 8th

Talking With by Jane Martin

presented by Theatre West Van

Jane Martin has assembled in Talking With eleven widely varied characters who express their innermost thoughts, eccentricities, fantasies, beliefs and dreams with humour and perception. The themes, which include religion, life and death, reveal the reality that there is more than one form of reference in comprehending our ever-changing world. Jane Martin, a pseudonym, has received great acclaim for her writing. Her identity has been kept a closely guarded secret. Some would have us believe that there is more than one author. The intrigue is fascinating. This "theatre work" was first produced for the Louisville New Play Festival in 1982 and later played in New York, where it was named "an outstanding play" by the American Theater Critics Association. Directed by Christine Gardner

Time of My Life by Alan Ayckbourn

presented by Deep Cove Stage

A delicious rendering of family dynamics set in a local eatery where anything goes! The story revolves around the Stratton family, Laura and Gerry Stratton and their two sons, Adam and Glyn. Adam, the youngest of the two sons, is the apple of his mother's eye, while Glyn, Adams' older brother, is the apple of every woman's eye. While Adam's story is told from past to present, Glyn's story goes forward in time. Gerry and Laura Stratton's story is a cleverly scripted exposé on their marriage, past and present. All of the scenes are played out in the restaurant, Essi de Calvi, where waiters who sing, interrupt, eavesdrop, spill and at times hurl insults at each other, serve up this slice-of-life play. Ayckbourn's script is witty, funny and poignant. He serves up all the ingredients of a wonderful, unique play that will have you screaming with laughter! Directed by Dale Kelly .

Friday, May 10th

Tell Me Why by Tim Cadeny

presented by Teens M.A.D. (Making a Difference)

A touching play about loving someone, losing them and how do you cope. Kaycee Chambers discusses and reminisces the relationship between her and her best friend Emma and the issue of suicide. This show isn't blunt about why suicide happens; it just takes a look at the relationship between two girls, best friends, and the way life can get bad and how suicide was a way out. It is a very subtle approach to the issue, full of realism, compassion and understanding. Directed by Tim Cadeny.
