Line-up of Plays

Monday, May 5th

The Odd Couple (Female Version) by Neil Simon

presented by Theatre West Van

Every Friday evening, six friends meet to play Trivial Pursuit and catch up on each other's lives. Only this night, something is wrong. Florence is missing! When a newly-separated, distraught Florence finally shows up, her best friend Olive persuades her to move in with her. This relationship is doomed from the start. The meticulously neat and highly-organized Florence and the disorganized and messy Olive are a seriously mismatched pair. Florence's compulsive cleaning and her many irritating habits and medical problems are slowly getting on Olive's nerves. When Florence ruins a promising evening with two sexy Spanish brothers, Olive has had enough and shows Florence the door.
Directed by Bill Elliott.

Tuesday, May 6th

The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh

presented by Deep Cove Strage Society

This black comedy takes a look at a mother-daughter relationship that has gone eerily askew. Mag Folan and her forty year old daughter Maureen have lived together most of their lives. Mag is a controlling, conniving mother who expects her daughter to stay at home and live out her life in the tiny dreary county of Connemara, Galway. The somewhat strained relationship takes a sudden turn when a man by the name of Pato Dooley takes a liking to Maureen. For Maureen, Pato represents a golden opportunity to get away from the drab, lifeless county in Ireland and perhaps, begin a new life with a new love, far away from the mother that rules the roost. Mother, of course, is incensed by this relationship and devises a scheme to try and thwart Maureen's affair. Mature Audiences only. Warning: Coarse language
Directed by Judi Price.

Wednesday, May 7th

Anastasia by Marcelle Maurette

presented by North Vancouver Community Players

English adaptation by Guy Bolton. This continental historical drama takes place in a large room in Prince Bounine's house on the outskirts of Berlin in 1926. When the Czar of Russia and his family were executed by firing squad on July 16, 1918, rumours immediately began to circulate that one of the family had survived the execution. This play tells the story of Anna, a mentally confused woman, whose attempted suicide draws the attention of some Russian expatriates. They decide to use her resemblance to the late Tsarina Anastasia in a plot to gain control of the dead Czar's fortune. They coach her in details and arrange to have her meet survivors of the Revolution, who recognize her as the Tsarina. As her mind clears, she has flashes of memory that seem to confirm the fact that she is, indeed, the Tsarina.
Directed by Bob Bradley

Thursday, May 8th

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

presented by The Krysalis Theatre Company, North Vancouver

This drama is a powerful and haunting story of a woman's descent into madness. Feeling trapped and alone, she struggles to find some relief from the impact of her emotional condition which has likely been brought on by post-partum depression. Gradually she becomes aware that she seems not to be improving, despite the special care she is receiving from her husband, a physician of high standing. Sadly, he does not see how deeply ill she has become. She, in turn, hides her pain for fear of seeming ungrateful. As time goes by, her sense of reality and fantasy merge, which can only lead to shattering consequences.
Directed by Jennifer Morabito.

Following the intermission, The Skittles will be presenting some original comedic skits (a non-competitive entry).

Friday, May 9th

Five Women Wearing the Same Dress by Alan Ball

presented by Between Shifts Theatre Society, Squamish

This comedy/drama takes place during an ostentatious wedding reception. Five reluctant, identically-clad bridesmaids hide out in an upstairs bedroom, each with their own reason to avoid the proceedings below. As the afternoon wears on, these five very different women joyously discover a common bond in this wickedly-funny, irreverent and touching celebration of the women's spirit.
Directed by Kathryn Daniels.

Saturday, May 10th
