Theatre BC's Mainstage Scholarships for High School Drama Students

Theatre BC and the Mainstage Host Organizing Committee are pleased to announce a provincial scholarship opportunity for drama students throughout British Columbia. Theatre BC is offering ten Mainstage Student Scholarships to be awarded to selected applicants.

At 77 years, Mainstage is one of the longest running theatre traditions in Canada and represents the largest community theatre-based event in the country. Theatre professionals from around BC participate as adjudicators and workshop instructors in this multi-faceted event.

All students considering pursuing theatre in any form following high school are eligible to apply. Each scholarship (valued at more than $300 per student) will include an all-access Festival Pass for this year's nine-day Mainstage event, running (TBA) July at The Sagebrush and Pavilion Theatres in Kamloops. Each of these scholarships will cover admission to:

- all ten Mainstage performances at The Sagebrush (eight evenings plus two matinees), featuring the "Best Production" from each of Theatre BC's ten regional "Zone Festivals" being held throughout the province in May. Productions are selected by the contracted theatre-professional adjudicator at each Zone Festival. Each evening, the Festival Adjudicator will provide a brief public adjudication from the stage, following the performance;
- all eight Green Room parties, running each evening following the evening performances;
- all ten Coffee Critiques, running each morning (and afternoon following matinee days). The Coffee Critiques feature the Festival Adjudicator and the cast & crew of the previous day's Mainstage performance in a seminar/workshop/discussion on what worked, what could have worked better and the suggestions the Adjudicator may have for the group;
- two "Backstage at Mainstage" course workshops of the student’s choice;
- a group meeting of all scholarship students with the Adjudicator, who will share their insight on a professional theatre career.

One of our MAINSTAGE Scholarship recipients summed up her experience by saying,

‘I thought that MAINSTAGE was an incalculably valuable experience. Being able to see
all of those amazing plays was fantastic, and comparing my impressions to those of
the adjudicator at the coffee critiques was really helpful as well. I became a much
more knowledgeable audience member and learned so much about live theatre. The
workshops were great because I was able to choose something that I was interested in
learning more about. One of the workshops I attended was taught by an instructor
from Capilano College, and meeting her has made me reconsider attending the theatre
programs there. The workshops gave me lots of quick tips that I can use later on in
my theatre career and I was able to ask lots of questions. I loved being able to
meet more 'theatre people' from Kamloops and beyond. In all, the experience
I had at MAINSTAGE was just a whirlwind of amazing event after amazing event.’
