THEATRE BC has served as the
provincial parent association of community theatre in the province since 1932 and is
committed to promoting the development of theatre in B.C. through a wide range of
programs, services, events and festivals offered year round:
Purposes &
Objectives:
To serve and represent community
theatre groups in order to benefit cultural growth within British Columbia;
To act as a parent body in providing
services to community theatre groups;
To encourage theatre as a
recreational activity;
To enlist the support of citizens
and government for theatrical activity;
To contribute to the development of
theatre in British Columbia and in Canada;
To foster, guide, develop, organize
and administer provincial drama festivals;
To work with and encourage
continuing co-operation with arts organizations provincially, inter-provincially and
nationally.

Zone
Structure:
Theatre BC is divided into
10 geographical
regions, or "Zones", led by 4-person "Zone Executives", elected
from Theatre BC members in the Zone. Member Clubs designate "Club Reps" to meet
with the Zone Executive and report between the Zone and the Club on local, Zone and
provincial activities, help coordinate Regional Workshops, Theatre Instructor Tours and
the annual Zone Festival.
Zones set their own meetings, budgets,
request professionally-led workshops, raise funds through casinos to support regional
activity, and coordinate their Zone Festival with guidance from Theatre BC. Based on the
number of entries, two productions represent each Zone at Theatre BC's annual provincial
MAINSTAGE Festival in July.
Goals:
Continued development/addition
of support staff for the provincial office and event coordination;
Production and province-wide
distribution of a new membership, programs and services brochure;
Broader public profile in support of
all Theatre BC events;
Upgrading of computer technology,
including continued in-house development of the Theatre BC web site & e-mail;
Greater private sector involvement
in regional and provincial level events;
Expanded and greater regional access
to Club Card Program member benefits, including regional theatres and theatre-related
industry sponsors;
Increased number of Theatre
Instructor Tours and Regional Workshops in outlying Zones.

MAINSTAGE
(Early July)
One of Canada's oldest theatre
traditions features the "Best Productions" of Theatre BC's 10 preceding Zone
Festivals over an 8 or 9 schedule;
Includes 2- 4 "Workshop Plays" also
selected from Zone Festivals;
Special Course workshops are
added for registrants and the public alike;
Professionally adjudicated
performances include brief nightly public critiques and in-depth "Coffee
Critiques" the following morning;
Overall "Best Production",
runner-up, ensemble and outstanding individual performances, and top designs are
recognized by the Adjudicator with presentation of "The Thespian" bronze
sculpture, produced annually by Geert Maas, Kelowna;
As many as 350 registrants attend
annually;
Audiences total more than 5,000 over
the week;
Financial impact is over $1 million
for host community;

(March - June)
Organized by each Theatre BC Zone as
a regional celebration of community theatre;
Professionally adjudicated
performances determine representative productions for MAINSTAGE;
Zones subsidize Member Clubs' travel
to MAINSTAGE;
Average 5.5 days and 7 productions
in 10 different Zone Festival locations year to year, playing to theatre audiences of over
10,000 people;
Zone Festivals directly involved
over 700-1000 cast and crew members throughout BC;
No restrictions to running times or
subject matter;
Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition
Introduced in 1989 for Canadian
playwrights to promote the development of original, unproduced new plays;
Full-Length, One Act and Special
Merit categories offer cash awards of $1,000, $750 and $500;
Category-winning playwrights are
brought to the New Play Festival, where they are teamed with a professional
director for one-to-one dramaturgy, then with a cast of registrant actors for 15 hours of
re-working sessions and finally a staged public reading, each winter;
Competition runs from year-round
with the deadline for entry on the fourth Monday each July;
Well over 2,500 original scripts
have been entered in 18 years;
Many winning and finalist plays go
on to professional productions.
Talent
Bank Referrals:
Theatre professionals listed on
Theatre BC's Talent Bank may be referred to member clubs for workshops, Guest Artist
directing, and/or consultant work on club productions;
Sample resumes and photos are
provided for Member Clubs' review;
Theatre BC completes all contractual
arrangements on behalf of Member Clubs;
Professional
Instruction: (Year Round)
Available to members at the Zone
or Member Club level through responsive-type programs, including Regional Workshops
and Theatre Instructor Tours, at any time over the year;
Hosts determine the workshop
topic(s) and time period(s) they wish and contact Theatre BC for potential instructors;
Theatre BC matches available
personnel with hosts and conducts all contractual arrangements;
Access to professional instruction
offers opportunities to develop theatre skills, increase production capabilities and
encourages participants to get more out of their theatre experience;
Workshops are also added to Theatre
BC festivals and a strong educational emphasis is placed on festival adjudication to
further encourage development.
Club Card Program:
Each Theatre BC member carries a
personalized Club Card that makes them eligible for member rates on all Theatre BC
workshops, festivals, resource material and merchandise for savings up to 50%;
The Club Card is honoured by
Member Clubs and regional theatres across B.C., as well as participating
Greater Vancouver
Professional Theatre Alliance (GVPTA) companies, for savings on box office prices of up to
50%;

Theatre BC and BC Museums Association have a
reciprocal arrangement where Theatre BC's member clubs can
extend the ticket discounts offered to fellow Theatre BC
Club Card members to the BC Museums Association's
Go Card members. In return, BCMA member facilities
offer Theatre BC Club Card members discounts on
admissions to galleries and museums and preferred rental
rates on available venues within these galleries and
museums. And the benefits are province-wide for Theatre BC
members, with BCMA member facilities located all across BC.

Awards &
Scholarships: (Annually)
The Eric Hamber Award
may be presented at MAINSTAGE annually to a nominated person, Member Club or
institution having made an outstanding contribution to community theatre in B.C. over a
long period of time;
Theatre BC Diamond of
the Year Award Instituted in
2007 (Theatre BC's 75th -or Diamond- Anniversary) Awarded to a Theatre BC member
who, in the past year, has worked toward furthering the Mission Statement of Theatre BC:
To promote and encourage the development of community theatre in British Columbia by
providing leadership and opportunities for participation, education and sharing the
enjoyment of diverse theatre experiences.
Zone Recognition Awards may be given at the Zone Festival annually
to a person or Member Club having made an outstanding contribution to his or her Zone;
The Jessie
L. Richardson and Sid Williams Memorial Scholarships (in
conjunction with Courtenay Little Theatre) $1000 scholarships may be awarded at MAINSTAGE
to two student applicants accepted by a post-secondary theatre program at a recognized
Canadian institution to further their training.

Over 1,750 donated titles are
available to members on a "reference only" basis;
Includes adjudicator copies of all
Zone and MAINSTAGE festival entries since 1991;
Includes two copies each of the
winning plays from Theatre BC's Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition
since 1989.
Group Insurance Plan:
Member Clubs can insure their
theatres or premises, equipment, members and audiences against injury, property damage and
theft at discounted annual premiums through Barton Insurnace Brokers Ltd.
