World Theatre Day 2010 - it's not too late to get involved!

Well, it seems that the "little event" we have starting tomorrow is taking up alot of time and attention! (not to mention the fantastic PuSh Festival, Cultural Olympiad, and everything else that has been going on). To make a long story short, we have fewer listings for our World Theatre Day brochure this year compared to number we had last year. I suspect that many of you want to participate but simply haven't had the time to put any attention on it, which is TOTALLY understandable!

SO, we have decided to change tactics for this year. We will continue to accept submissions for World Theatre Day events on an ongoing basis up until the end of Febuary. Instead of printing a complete listings brochure, what we have decided to do is to print a WTD rack card with the GVPTA event highlights, and the web address for a full list of all the WTD events going on around the city. Closer to March we will also create a simple (black and white 8 1/2 x 11) pdf calendar of events that can be printed and distributed to your venues, offerred at your WTD events or downloaded online by interested audience members.

So please, if you haven't yet considered what your company can offer for WTD, give it some thought. It can be as simple as a Pay-What-You-Can that you already have planned, a backstage tour (we haven't got any of those yet!), an open rehearsal, a free lecture or talk-back - anything goes! We'll continue to update our World Theatre Day webpage and Facebook events page as listings come in. We'll also be advertising WTD events on Facebook starting in March and tweeting each day there is a WTD event happening.

Please send a brief description of your listing, including title, date, time, location, contact info and a short one or two sentence description to info@gvpta.ca. And please feel free to call me if you want to run any ideas by me - I'm happy to offer suggestions if you want to participate but don't quite know how - 604-608-6799

The Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award 2010

Deadline for submissions is March 26, 2010. For a Nomination Form please see the PACT website.

Introduction

Toronto, February 4th, 2010 – The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres (PACT) is pleased to announce a call for nominations for the 2010 Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 26, 2010.

This $5000 Award was initiated in celebration of PACT’s 30th anniversary in 2006-2007 and named in honour of Mallory Gilbert, who was Tarragon Theatre’s General Manager for 34 years and one of the founders and Past President of PACT. Supported by the PACT Communications Centre (PCC) and by Tarragon Theatre, the annual Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award celebrates and recognizes outstanding leadership within the Canadian Theatre community.

The Award includes a $1000 portion presented to a protégé chosen by the Award winner, underlining the importance of skills and knowledge transmission in leadership building. Mallory Gilbert, the Award’s namesake, is one of Canada’s most respected arts managers. In addition to her successful 34-year tenure at Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre, she has served on numerous local and national boards of directors and advisory boards. Ms. Gilbert served on PACT’s Board for 20 years (as PACT President 1989-1993), and she was the recipient of PACT Honourary Life Membership in 2005. By mentoring countless aspiring arts administrators during the course of her career, she has shaped the careers of many of Canada’s theatre leaders and encouraged the creation of exciting new theatre ventures.

The Panel

The 2010 Selection Panel for the Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award is currently composed of Mallory Gilbert (Toronto, ON), Cherry Karpyshin (Winnipeg, NB), and Heather Redfern (Vancouver, BC), with further panelists to be announced. The Selection Panel will review all nominations and select one winner, judging nominations against the eligibility requirements. At its discretion, the Selection Panel may choose to grant no award or multiple awards in one year. All Selection Panel deliberations are strictly confidential. The award recipient will be named at the 2010 PACT Conference in Cow Head, NL.

Background

In an exceptional collaboration based on their deep appreciation for Mallory’s contribution to both organizations and their shared commitment to leadership in the theatre community, Tarragon Theatre and PACT Communications Centre have initiated the Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award. Tarragon Theatre is sponsoring and helping to promote the award; PACT Communications Centre will administer the award and its selection process, and host the presentation ceremony at the PACT Conference each year.

The Mallory Gilbert Leadership Award was presented in 2009 to Heather Redfern, Executive Director of the Vancouver East Cultural Centre in Vancouver, BC.

Deemed as one of Western Canada's most respected arts managers, Heather inspires others through her hard work advocating for and promoting Canadian theatre, whether as a founding member of the Magnetic North Theatre Festival, Managing Director of Catalist Theatre, Executive Director at Vancouver East Cultural Centre, or mentor to emergining arts administrators.

The protégé selected by Heather was Kris Nelson, a Montreal-based curator, agent, producer and dramaturg.

UBC Arts Internship Program

Are you looking to bring new talent and energy into your organization? The Faculty of Arts at UBC has just launched the Arts Internship Program and is actively recruiting host organizations for part-time (8-12 hours a week) January- April 2010 volunteer placements.

If your organization wants an eager and skilled undergraduate intern from UBC please contact Phoenix Lam, Arts Internship Coordinator, at 604-822-9433 or phoenix.lam@ubc.ca.

What are the Costs to My Organization?

All internships are unpaid volunteer positions and there’s no cost to posting your opportunity with us, or having us send you applicants.

To help an intern be successful, you’ll need to ensure someone from your staff is available to provide some basic training to the student at the start of the internship, and offer them support and feedback during the internship.

Who are the Interns?

Interns are UBC Vancouver students in the Faculty of Arts from a wide range of studies in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Fine and Performing arts. Students can participate in an internship after completing their first year in the Faculty of Arts.

What if I Need Full Time Help?

UBC offers you many ways to hire current students. If you’d like full-time help for 4 or 8 months, please contact the UBC Arts Co-op Program arts.co-op@ubc.ca.

What is the Process?

  1. Submit a detailed internship description and we will post it on our Careers Online website.

  2. Interview and Selection Process
All applications will be sent to you either via email or through mail within a week after the deadline has closed. To ensure you get the best candidates for your organization we encourage Host Organizations to set up interviews one to two weeks after the application deadline.

  3. Offer and Confirm the Placement
Once you have decided on the candidate, you can contact the candidate and offer them the internship. Many students will chose to apply to more than one internship, so we encourage all Host Organizations to decide and give a student an offer as soon as possible to ensure you are able to secure your ideal candidate

Qwest

VANCOUVER, BC - Screaming Weenie's Managing Artistic Director Seán Cummings has announced the creation of a play development program for British Columbia playwrights working on queer-themed work.

Qwest comes on the heels of the highly successful Clean Sheets: new play workshop and reading series, where Screaming Weenie hosted four playwrights from across Canada and placed them with local professional directors and actors.

With Qwest, Screaming Weenie continues to pursue its goal of facilitating a stronger queer community by creating and encouraging the performing arts and artists.
Simply put, the program selects writers to spend up to a year developing their play with a Screaming Weenie dramaturge.

Interested writers are directed to submit a query to C. E. Gatchalian at chris@screamingweenie.com. The query should include an artist’s CV, a description of the play you’re working on, and a statement about what you hope to accomplish with the play and why you’d like to develop it with Screaming Weenie.

Please note that because of the volume of submissions and the limited slots available, submission of a query does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
