Thor Arngrim

Western Gold Theatre joins those who mourn the recent loss of a great man of the theatre, Thor Arngrim, who served for many years as a Director on the Board of Western Gold and was instrumental in Western Gold's production of the award winning Strangers Among Us.

Thor, a co-founder of the famous Totem Theatre of Vancouver in 1951, was a pioneer with a varied and illustrious career. He appeared on Broadway in the original 1956 Broadway production of "Tamburlaine the Great" directed by Tyronne Guthrie and in the 1964 Tony-winning production of "Luther" and was personal manager to the likes of Liberace and Debbie Reynolds.

After his return to Vancouver in 1993 he was recognized with a Jessie Award (GVPTA Career Achievement Award) and UBCP's Sam Payne award and his loss will be felt by the whole of the theatre community.

Donations in his memory can be made to AIDS Project Los Angeles(APLA.org), where he volunteered for many years; to PAL Vancouver(palvancouver.org/); or to the Parkinson Society of British Columbia (www.parkinson.bc.ca/) .

Nicole Gosselin

Theatre BC is very sad to report the passing of Nicole Gosselin (Nanaimo Theatre Group) in November. Nicole was an involved patron, Thespian Award sponsor and huge supporter of Theatre BC, both as an individual and through her design company, Nik-Art Costumes & Designs. She was a fixture at Mainstage Awards Banquet for many years, including this summer's festival in Maple Ridge. You may remember her from the imaginative hair colours & styles she loved to sport just for the pure fun of it.

Though small in stature, she had a huge heart, a playful nature and was always upbeat and positive, even up to her last days battling her illness.
Her passing has left a huge hole in the many groups she was an active part of, including Daybreak Rotary of Nanaimo (with whom she had travelled to Africa to help with immunization efforts) and the Nanaimo Pond Club.
We send our deepest sympathy to Nicole's son LK, her sister Carol and all of her family back in Montreal.

We are grieved to report that Ed Kuhn,
Full-length Winner of Theatre BC's 21st (2009) Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition, passed away on Thursday, October 1st, before the announcement of the winners in this year's competition.

Ed Kuhn was an accomplished poet, playwright, songwriter and Jazz musician. He wrote at least 32 stage plays, three full-length musicals and countless poems. One stage play in particular, Satin Doll , won two distinguished awards and had a run On-Broadway. His full length musical Majic was produced at the Historic Hedgerow Theatre just outside Philadelphia, Pa. He was composing poems up until the day that he died. Ed was a previous finalist in Theatre BC’s Canadian National Playwriting Competition in 1998.

Our condolences go out to Ed’s family and his many friends.
