| Theatre BCs 11th Annual Canadian
National Playwriting Competition finished the jury process right on schedule and the
Winners and Finalists were announced via the website and broadcast email during the
weekend of December 4-5, 1999. A press release was issued following the weekend and all
critiques, scripts and Competition Summaries were mailed out to the
playwrights before Christmas. The Winners and Finalists for this years Competition have been invited to the New Play Festival in Kamloops, April 7-9, 2000 and all have accepted. This years jurors were Sally Clark, award-winning playwright and filmmaker and former playwright-in-residence with "Theatre Passe Muraille", the "Shaw Festival" and "Nightwood Theatre", Mark Hellman, actor, director, composer, teacher, producer and consultant with over 20 years experience in theatre, and Libby Mason, actor, writer, director, dramaturge and teacher with 27 years experience in theatre (see photos and bios on opposite page). Their selections for Winners and Finalists for the 11th Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition are as follows: Winner Full Length Category: "November" by Jamie Norris, Vancouver, BC Winner One Act Category: "Two Words" by Denise Blinn & Gabrielle Kemeny, Toronto, ON Winner
Special Merit Category: The Seven Finalists in random order: "A Bigger World" (FL) by Lilla Csorgo, Toronto, ON "Easy Money" (FL) by Nicola Harwood, Victoria, BC "Kitchen Party" (FL) by Maureen Robinson, North Vancouver, BC "White Lies" (FL) by Larry MacKillop, Nanton, AB "I.C.U." (1A) by Marita Dachsel, Vancouver, BC "Home Movies: An Interdisciplinary Performance Piece" (1A) by Sally Stubbs, Vancouver, BC "The Third Encounter" (1A) by Sjahari Hollands, Langley, BC Honorable Mention: "p.c. (Protective Custody)" by David Burgess, Guelph, ON This year 63 Full-Length and 52 One Act plays were entered in the Competition, with no disqualifications. This was well down from last year's total of 192 scripts, very likely caused by the delayed announcement and deadline for entry, but the jurors commented that the top scripts were of very high quality. We are back on track and have already set dates for the 12th. Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition. The Deadline for Entries is set for Monday, July 24, 2000 with the announcement of results coming in mid-November. The New Play Festival will again be in early April 2001 in Kamloops. |
