| BACKSTAGE'99 Wrap-up |
| BACKSTAGE 99 more than exceeded its targeted 200
registrants, with a total registration of 210, compared with 160 for BACKSTAGE 98
and 116 for BACKSTAGE 97. A superlative line-up of professional instructors,
including Morris Panych and Ken MacDonald, Dean Paul Gibson, Martin
Kinch, Judy Norton, Bart Anderson, Joan MacLeod, Sally Clark,
Dolores Drake and Nicholas Harrison, attracted registrants from around the
Province and the Yukon. We were pleased to welcome a party of seven students and two teachers who drove down from Smithers. Kris Buller joined us again from Powell River and proudly displayed the gold fob watch given to him by his parents as a reward for attending three BACKSTAGEs in as row. Way to go, Kris! The Granville Island Brewing Company premises were used once again for the Opening Reception. We were delighted that in addition to our Honorary Patron, Donna Spencer, being present and making a short speech of welcome, 18 out of 23 of the workshop instructors were also in attendance. Many remarked that they were pleased to have the opportunity to meet up again with their fellow theatre professionals, some after a long absence. Some rave reviews were:
We again applied to our continuing hospitality sponsors for help with food for the Opening Reception, the morning coffee and muffins at the registration desk and the Closing Reception at the Charles Scott Gallery in the Emily Carr Institute of Art & Design. Chair Val Mason and Office Manager Anne Marsh will continue to head up this years event, so MARK YOUR CALENDARS for the weekend of November 10-12, 2000 and come on down to Granville Island, first for the Opening Reception at the Granville Island Brewing Company on the Friday night and then take in two full days of professional workshops. Another exciting lineup of instructors is already being put in place, but we are always open to suggestions.
