Crimes of the Heart Review:

By Darren BolzNortheast Weekly - Fort St. John

February 16, 2005

To be in the theatre the day after Aurther Miller's death was a treat beyond words. I sent a passing prayer to the greatest American playwright, and settled in to watch "Crimes of the Heart" by Beth Henley.

This is Darren Szpak's first time in the directors chair and he really had a hold of the mood and style this show needs. Esentees D'sign designed the set which was a highly deatailed kitchen and living room of a Southern American home. The costume design from Jenn Gretzinger was the perfect touch for the local thespians.

Lenny Magrath, played by Terry Boyle, set the slow pace of the show terrifically. The performances, to me signified the toll of extreme life circumstances that each of these characters had gone through, such as Meg Magrath, played by Jen Strachan, having found the body of her mother after she had hung herself. Yes this is a comedy and Babe Botrelle, played by Stephanie Pound, has that is spades. I guess somebody that shoots her husband in the stomach when she was aiming for his heart is fun to me. Oh well nothing that a glass of lemonade won't cure!

Bar none the funniest and most chilling moment comes when there is a miscommunication between the two sisters, Lenny and Babe. One runs to the phone with a bout of confidence to call upon a lost love, and the other up the stairs with a piece of rope and her mothers intentions. Pam Mounsey, Mike Bisset, and Marc Schmidt helped to complete the Crimes and the audience answered with gracious applause and whistles.

If there was any troubled waters this show experienced in bringing Crimes to the stage, Darren Szpak and the cast built and brought us safely home.
